PAISLEY, ONTARIO - SOUVENIR OF PAISLEY BRIDGE OPENING - OCTOBER 29TH 1935
I picked up this book at an antique shop - and I only paid $8 for it! Inside are many photos and detailed biographical sketches of the current and former residents of Paisley, Ontario as of 1935. There are advertisements from local businesses, greetings and best wishes from past residents, and an "In Memoriam" section at the back. If you have ancestors from Paisley, this little book is quite the treasure!
STRATFORD, ONTARIO - "THE CLASSIC" STRATFORD NORMAL SCHOOL YEARBOOK - 1947
I found this yearbook at a local antique shop, and I paid $15.00 for it. It appears to be the first yearbook published since classes resumed after the Second World War. Along with the usual student and teacher photos and biographies, there are tales of students' wartime activities and an honour roll for past and present students. There are also quite a few advertisements from local (and not-so-local) businesses.
London, Ontario - centennial united church 60th anniversary booklet - 1935
I borrowed this book from my friends the Fraser family, who had in turn become the custodian of it after a relative downsized her home. Centennial United Church was located at 858 Dundas Street in London, Ontario. I am not sure when it ceased to be a United Church, but the building still stands and is now home to The Gathering Place and Revival Centre.
St. Marys, Ontario - the centenary - First Presbyterian church 1848-1948 book
I found this book at the Stratford Antique Warehouse; since they're closing this weekend and my items are deeply discounted, I paid $7.50 for it. This book provides "an historical narrative of the congregation" as they celebrate 100 years of fellowship. Several photographs of the building, and of past and present members of the congregation, are included.
London, ONTARIO - London NORMAL SCHOOL YEARBOOK - June 1926
I won this book in an online auction; I paid $20 for it, and was surprised that nobody else bid against me! There are photos and biographies of the students and faculty, as well as some poetry and jokes, notes about athletics and clubs, and the WWI honour roll.
SARNIA TOWNSHIP, ONTARIO - A HISTORY OF BLACKWELL CHURCH AND COMMUNITY - 1958
I found this book at an antique mall somewhere in Southwestern Ontario, and I paid $8.00 for it. A history of the Blackwell community is presented, with a particular focus on Blackwell United Church. Sadly closing in 2014, Blackwell United Church was demolished to make way for several houses. Its memory lives on, in this book and in the memories of its parishoners.
ST. JACOBS, ONTARIO - CENTENNIAL OF ST. JAMES EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH - 1966
I found this book at an antique mall somewhere in Southwestern Ontario, and I paid $3.00 for it. This book details the history of St. Jacobs and Woolwich Township, and the three iterations of the Evangelical Lutheran church building in St. Jacobs. Its congregation is still going strong!
