Beginning in around 1830, Charles DeWitt was a Bailiff for the Court of King's Bench for the District of Montreal. His bailiwick included all or part of the current administrative region of Montérégie, at the time the Seigneurie of Annfield (Chateauguay, Beauharnois, Huntingdon, and surrounding areas.) As Bailiff, he served warrants and summonses; his main tasks appeared to be enforcing court decisions, particularly as they related to debts and property matters. Charles DeWitt kept many records, and there are some that have survived to be included on this site. Legal documents dating between 1830 and 1868, and that don't seem to relate to the DeWitt family, are considered to be related to Charles DeWitt's work.
The records on this page are from the 1830s. They are not in any particular order.
Note - my extremely rusty high school French was only marginally helpful when attempting to understand these complex French language legal records. I am indebted to the fine people on the Quebec Genealogy Facebook group for helping to explain the gist of many of these documents. If any are inaccurately described, please let me know!

** This likely has more to do with Charles DeWitt than just being a document kept by him, seeing as he was a steamboat captain himself; until I can figure out exactly what his role was in this operation, I'm going to put these documents here.
Any help would be appreciated! **
